The year is 1971. Gary Frost and Roger Dix are partners
on the police department....uniformed officers,
the grunts who get the job done,
day after day and night after night.
Because of a dumb cop and a stupid accident,
racial tensions are running high.
It’s a scary time to be behind the badge.
This book is a work of fiction largely based in fact.
Most of the characters are people or composites of people
I knew or worked with back in the day.
It is not politically correct.
It is honest, accurate, and raw.
The names have been changed to
protect the guilty as well as the innocent.
Hit the street with Frost and Dix,
but keep your head on a swivel.
Anything can happen when
it’s time to play Cowboys and Indians.

David R Lewis, is able to say "been there, done that" and it's obvious in his books. He brings characters to life that he might not otherwise be able to without his experience. Not only characters, but locales, scene's and the overall feel for the sites and bits of history that make for lively reading. The cops sense of humor is non-stop, really funny, and adds flavor, but not a distraction to this master story teller's story. I read almost all of David's western stories and wasn't too sure this cop story would measure up (I'm a big western fan) to his western novels. Boy, was I wrong. Cowboys & Indians is a first rate story of the lives of the men in blue by one of it's members. That, plus the underlying message (Gary & Dix friendship) that skin color doesn't mean a thing to true friends. I'll probably read this book again in a couple years, if I live that long. While I don't think it's quite as good as "Lonesome Dove", it's damn close. I give it five stars.Product details

Cowboys and Indians eBook David R Lewis Ulva Eldridge Reviews
I have read several of David's books and he is becoming one of my favorite authors. Great story teller. Thanks
Entertaining, easy read. I finished the book in three sittings, would love to see this set of characters turned into a series. Can't wait to read the next one
Cowboys and Indians is a great read!
Outstanding characters, riveting story.
This is story telling at its best!
Looking forward to the next Frost and Dix saga
David Lewis writes nothing but great books. It doesn't matter if it's; a Cop, a Western, or a Who dun it all the books are all nighters. I only have one complaint I'm reading faster than he writes.
This is such a well written story about life from a law enforcement perspective and the lives of people opposite them. If you have any connections with either side you will truly appreciate this book. Job well done Mr. David R. Lewis.
Great story with good cop humour that everyone can enjoy. It doesn't matter where you work or worked in the western world in the "Job' you recognise the writing of those that have been there and done that. I worked as a cop during that error in another country and have to say could totally relate to many of the stories within the book which meant I had a wry smile going most of the time.
I have recommended this book to others their feedback has been very positive. Keep up the great work!!
Move over, Joseph Wambaugh; Lewis is in town. Cowboys and Indians is one of the finest novels featuring police officers that I've ever read, and I've read more than a few. I've long considered Wambaugh the "best ever" in that genre. Now I've bumped him down to second place. David R. Lewis is, in my opinion, the new Champion. I especially enjoyed the idiocy of one of America's Dumbest Cops, the character known as (ahem!) Fred Baker. Gary Frost and Roger Dix qualify as the ultimate partners, and despite my utter lack of experience in law enforcement, I have to say the presentation is as real as it gets.
The story wouldn't really come to life without the rough cop humor that permeates throughout, but that's the way it has to be. Every group of working men has something like that, with the more dangerous professions generating the sharper jokes, both practical and otherwise. I even laughed at the practical jokes, which is saying something--since I've never been able to tolerate a practical joker.
Overall, there's "plenty of everything". Suspense? Got it. Mystery? Here and there, definitely. Action? Over the top. Powerful character development? You bet. Pleasant surprises to balance out the negative stuff? Of course. Bottom line, it all adds up to a book capable of pulling the reader into the action. You're there, smelling the mean streets, feeling the fear sweat running down your armpits, facing down the racists of whatever color, loving it like George Peppard on the old A Team television show when a plan comes together.
Five Stars, and if David Lewis ever gets a sequel up and available, I'll be on it like the proverbial duck on a June bug.
